Obviously, homicide and physical assault would qualify as workplace violence in any definition. Fortunately they are not the most common types of violence and aggression in the workplace. Because they are so destructive and harmful, they must be considered to be high priority in efforts to reduce, control, and hopefully minimize or eliminate destructive acts. However, there are many other, more common examples of workplace violence and aggression with which we must deal. 7 Some of these other forms of violence and aggression have been described using different names and concepts, but all have characteristics in common.

There are other forms of aggressiveness that are more often used by women, and these too are hurtful and damaging. This does not mean that only women use the less direct forms of aggression, for these are found in men and boys too, as we will see later.
