This assumption has two parts, both of which are worth investigating. The first part of the assumption concerns the subject matter knowledge a teacher holds. Questions continually arise over what and how much knowledge teachers need. Some reformers (Bradley Commission, 1989) call for all social studies teachers to have at least the equivalent of a major in college-level history coursework.
