I always felt that it would have been more appropriate for the teacher to apologize to me and the class, but no such justice existed in 1927–1928.  That public attention caused me to be elected student body president in both schools where I won student approval for opposing the arbitrary restraints on our social life as students.  I could not participate in those extra social activities that required any special expenditure.  There were a few students with some social conscience, but not enough to have any impact on the teaching profession.

They maintained that no one should trust an agreement with the Communist party.  The "United Front from Below" was paramount.  They were public organizations, but Page 24 they were mainly controlled by Party leaders as our "transmission" belts.  At that time, when there were indications the industrial union movement would begin, the TUUL ended its attempt at separate organization and dissolved.  That was the usual way in which the personal integrity of a prominent leader was undermined before he was expelled and politically destroyed.

So I accepted invitations to attend many more meetings in Portland where I had the opportunity to talk with Communist leader Walker.  At that time I learned that their fundamental political program was the revolutionary overthrow of the capitalist system, replacing it with a socialist system which they claimed was succeeding in the Soviet Union.  It kept itself hidden from public access because of constant fear of illegal attacks and violence from a hostile public and public officials.  They suspected every stranger of being a government agent out to spy on and betray them.
